Whittier & Salmon

August 8 we drove from Homer to Whittier through some very spectacular scenery, by a fabulous salmon viewing area and through the new train and car tunnel to Whittier and back out the tunnel to our campground by the salmon viewing area. Photos show some of the scenery and sights of this day.

Whittier is a very small commercial port that cruise ships use to pass passengers through to go to Anchorage and Denali and it is an industrial sea to railhead port for container cargo. In Whittier there is a glacier high above the town with a stream running down to the bay. To access it you must drive through a $12 fee tunnel that carries cars and trains in the single lane tunnel. Use of the tunnel by cars is limited to one way for 15-minute intervals and also by trains on a set schedule so you may have to wait up to half an hour to go through the tunnel. We were lucky and got to go right through on our way to Whittier and when Pat drove the return trip she tagged onto the very end of a group to get through. It’s strange to drive in the dark tunnel on railroad tracks set into pavement for about 3 ½ minutes needed to go through this small tunnel.

The salmon viewing area was fantastic and there were the red sockeye salmon in the stream along with some pinks and some chum salmon. You can walk along about a half a mile of stream with many opportunities to see them very close if you are here during spawning season
