Dick's Birthday - a busy day in Dawson City

Slept in late today to start off Dick’s 61st birthday. When he got up he got on the wi-fi internet connection and received voice package fro Eric of Brandon and Ethan and Emma wishing him a Happy Birthday. Later in the day he received a birthday email from DJ and his family.

Off to tour Dawson City attractions. First was a visit to Jack London home and center where a gentleman gave about an hour’s talk on Jack London and his
activities in Dawson. Well worth the $2 admission fee and London’s actual cabin has been restored and is open to view. Next, after a 45 minute shopping trip to some local stores came a visit to the home of Robert Service, the author of numerous books and stories for a presentation. The presentation by a Parks Canada employee was excellent. The young man presented a very entertaining narration of Robert Service’s life and then from memory presented “The of Dangerous Dan McGrew”.

Following the Robert Service show we returned to the visitor’s center where a young lady in period costume took us on an hour and one-half walking tour of Dawson City. It’s a fascinating place that has been preserved just as it was in the time of the gold rush. The streets are not paved and there are actual boardwalks in front of all establishments and around town. The mud and water in the streets just adds to the reality of the place. We saw bordellos, alleyways, hotels, the old post office and old bank etc. This tour is well worth the ticket and should not be missed by anyone coming this way.

It now being 5 PM and not having anything since breakfast, Pat was hungry but Dick didn’t want dinner just yet so we settled for a French Dip for Pat and a dozen Hot Wings for Dick as a snack with plans to go for a birthday dinner later. Well, when later arrived about 8:30 Dick ended up with his strangest birthday meal ever. First to an old hotel and tried a local Cranberry beer. Next, for the main course, because the restaurant had closed while we walked down the street, all we could find open was an ice cream shop. Dick had a banana split and Pat a smoothie. Then off to the 10 pm show at Diamond Tooth Gerties where we had slices of pepperoni pizza and Dick had a house drink that was essentially a very strong Long Island Ice Tea. Not a typical birthday in the Tracy family!
